One Piece Baby Sweater
One Piece Baby Sweater
This sweater is knitted in one piece from worsted weight yarn,
then seamed at the sides and underarms.
I have not had time to test this sweater - anyone who makes one, please comment!
The borders are crocheted.
Size: 6 months - 1 year, Finished size: about 22" around
Materials:
• 4-ply worsted weight yarn -- (I used Lion Brand Pound of Love)
• Bond keyplate 3. Gauge 4 st, 5.75 rows = 1 inch
• Optional: ribbon for tie, or other method to close
• Note--you'll need claw weights or comparable because different areas
are cast on at different stages of the knitting and need to be
weighted down at that time. See Home-Made Weights for an idea.
Right Front:
Starting at 4th needle right of center, e-loop cast on 19. Work 34 rows.
COR
At right-hand end of row 34, using same yarn, cast on 15 st for sleeve. (34
st)
Knit 10 rows (rows 35-44) COR
Neck Shaping:
- Row 45: Bind off 3 at left edge, then knit across. (To bind off, pull st 2 thru
st 1, st 3 thru st 2, st 4 thru st 3, rehang st 4.)
- Row 46: Knit.
- Row 47: Transfer st 1 to needle 2, and knit across.
- Row 48: Knit.
- Rows 49-52: Repeat rows 47-48 twice.
- Work 4 more rows (rows 53-56). COR
Put those needles in holding position. Cut yarn leaving 8" tail..
Left Front:
RC=0
Leaving a 24" tail for later sewing and starting on 31st needle left of work
on machine, cast on 19. Work 35 rows. COL
At left-hand end of row 35, using same yarn, cast on 15 st for sleeve. (e
cast-on, right to left) (35 st)
Knit 10 rows (rows 36-45) COL
Neck Shaping:
- Row 46: Bind off 3 at right edge, then knit across. Knit row 47.
- Row 48: Transfer st 1 on right to needle 2, and knit across. Knit row 49.
- Rows 50-53: Repeat rows 48-49 twice
- Work 3 more rows (rows 54-56). COR. Cast on 18 st to right of work,
filling the gap between the two fronts.
- Work 1 row (row 57) COL. Do not cut yarn.
Back:
Put all needles into working position. Work 21 rows across all stitches
(rows 58-78) COR (Caution on first row – stitch at far right is loose.)
Row 79: Bind off left-most 15 stitches, then knit across. COL (This creates
a tight bind off, but it works OK in this case)
Row 80: Bind off right-most 15 stitches, then knit across. COR
Work 31 rows on remaining 44 st (Rows 81-111). COL
Cut yarn long enough for bind off plus 24" for sewing seams. Do back-
stitch bind-off
Finishing:
- Sew underarm and sleeve seams – start at bottom edge; using long yarn
tail, sew side seam and continue on across sleeve.
- Using I hook, work 1 row of sc + 2 rows extended sc around cuffs; work
1row of sc + 1 row of extended sc around bottom edge/front/neck edge
...........(Extended sc: With loop on hook, pull up a loop in next st, chain 1
through that loop, pull a loop through both loops on hook)
...........Work extended sc in front loop only; ch 2 to start round, slip stitch to
end round.
- Lightly steam and finger press edges to remove any tendency to curl.
